Cheek Implants

Cheek implants are used to bring the cheek into better balance with rest of the face. The implants may be made of hard implantable material such as silicone or Medpore, or demineralized bone. Cheek implants may be inserted in conjunction with other facial surgery such as a facelift to make the cheekbones more prominent.

You are a good candidate for cheek implants if you are a healthy adult. The doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of cheek implant surgery during your consultation to confirm that an implant appropriate for you.

Cheek implant procedures can be performed under local anesthesia plus sedation or with general anesthesia in our in-office surgery center on an outpatient basis. If performed during another facial cosmetic procedure, such as a facelift, it is normally done under general anesthesia. The insertion of the cheek implants is done through an incision is made inside the cheek to allow insertion of the implants through the mouth. There is no visible scarring on the face.

Once inserted, the surrounding tissue is stitched closed, to hold the implant in place. The cheek implant procedure typically takes about 1-2 hours. It is common to perform a cheek or midface lift while installing cheek implants.

Recovery time for cheek implants is about 1 week and slightly longer if additional procedures were done at the same time. There will be some swelling and bruising which can be relieved with pain medication and ice packs. Most patients may resume full activity within 2-4 days. When you leave the surgery center after the procedure, you will have with you your follow-up appointment schedule and you will come back for your follow-up within a few days so your progress can be assessed. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous physical activities for approximately one month after a cheek lift procedure and in particular, to avoid body contact sports or other activities that might cause trauma to the implant areas. Such sports activities might damage the implants.
